Nothing But The Truth

What is true? That can be a hard question. There are two ways to answer that. Yes, it’s true that Global Warming is going to kill the world soon, but there’s another way to answer it. It’s what you think is true in life.

Being truthful is the opposite of lieing. It’s being faithful to someone or something. I think that truth is hard to tell, definitely harder to tell than a lie. Like if you do something you shouldn’t have, and then you go home, what do you say to your parents? Well, if you lie, then its not as hard. But if they find out that you lied, you will suffer the consequences. But if you just tell the truth in the first place, maybe they’ll understand and you won’t get in as much trouble.

I also think that its true that life can be hard. But sometimes, and most of the time, you bring it upon yourself. Like for example, say you’re a bit late for something but you have something more important to do so you skip what you had to do in the first place. If you get in trouble for missing that, its only your fault and you will suffer the consequences.

Its also true that mistakes make you stronger. Mistakes shape you as a person. If your life is totally focused on being perfect, you won’t change as a person and you will stay on one level. You will never learn different than what you already know.

There are a lot of things that are also true. But things that are true in life are different, like how you think life should be, what you think make make you or break you, etc.

What’s The Most Important?

Our first question this week is, what is the most important thing a parent can do for a teenager?

Children and teenagers are hugely different. Little kids rely on their parents to feed them, clothe them, pick them up from school, help them with homework, love them, and way more. But as a teenager myself, I know that I can pack my own lunch, buy my own clothes, walk home from school by myself, and be independent. So since we don’t need all the things a child does, what do we need?

I know there’s a point in every teen’s life where they think their parents are the worst thing in their life and they think all their parents want to do is torture them. But your parents can help you a lot; they can teach you things that you need to know to be a successful adult. But that’s the question: what are those things? One of those things, in my opinion, is food. Yes I can pack my own lunch and make my toast in the morning, but I don’t want to, and honestly, don’t know how to, come home from school, do my homework quickly, and then cook myself a big steak supper with potatoes and whatever else I don’t know how to make.

Another important thing is rules. I know when your parents tell you to be in early, you groan and throw a temper tantrum, but they’re just trying to protect you. For me, I don’t have a curfew, it just depends where I am. I think that is a good rule. But one of the things that goes along with having rules is compromising. Your parents usually want to keep you happy, so I think you and your parents need to compromise the rules so you’re all happy.

The one last thing that everyone, no matter who you are, needs is love. Your parents are there for you when you’re in a fight, or you need someone to talk to. They’re the ones who care for you, no matter what the circumstance is. Even if you think they’re trying to ruin your life, they’re just looking out for you.

I think those things are the most important things I need from my parents.

TEDTalks Researching

For our TEDTalks projects, we spent a lot of time just researching about our topic. My topic was animal testing. One of the ways I researched about it was watching YouTube videos. That was one of the most common choices that I saw people doing. It could be because you get good information, or it could be that its just a fun and easy way to study.

Another way I researched about animal testing was looking on the internet, on sites about my topic. I would use search engine sites like Google to find the sites, then read the info on them. This way was the most common and most effective way to learn about your topic.

Another way was contacting people. The way I did it was by looking for email addresses that I could ask questions to. Only one place that I sent an email to replied, so I think this way of research isn’t that effective and I wouldn’t choose this as the best way of research.

The last way I found that I could use to research about animal testing was a blog search engine site called Technorati. On Technorati you can find blogs about a topic that you type in and any blogs that mention the words you typed in will show up. The only problem I had with Technorati was that the blogs weren’t just about the topic you typed in, it just had the words in one of the blogposts. If I had a choice of which way I could research, I wouldn’t choose using Technorati.

These are all the ways of researching that I used to research about my TEDTalks project, animal testing.

TEDTalks Project

For the past long while, we have been working on TEDTalks projects about major issues in the world. The topic I chose to do is animal testing. Over 50-100 million vertebrate animals are tested on each year.

Animal testing is not only cruel, but pointless. Just because a product is safe or unsafe to use on animal, doesn’t mean that it’s okay or not okay to use on a human. One of the solutions to animal testing that is going on right now is protesting. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn’t because if people don’t get a response quickly, they will give up.

Another is is donations. Donating on websites like PETA, SPCA, or StopAnimalTests probably can help, but what I don’t understand is where the money would go to help the problem. It goes to research but how does that help it? All it is is educating people about the issue.

Another one is petitions. Petitions could help because if you sign a petition to stop animal testing and then someone hands it in to a company, they could see how many people care about the issue. But just because a bunch of people signed a piece of paper doesn’t mean a top-of-the-line company is going to stop what they’re doing.

The last one I found was laws. There are no actual laws against all types of animal testing, only on testing cosmetic products on animals. Some people say that animal testing could become a regulation in some beauty product manufacturers.

We were told to come up with better solutions of our own. I came up with three. The first one is better protests that go on until results are shown. The second one is boycotting companies that test their products on animals. Boycotting a company is when you don’t buy anything that that company makes. I think this solution could help alot because if enough people do it, it would be really effective and the company would know that people want them to stop testing on animals and won’t buy their products untl they stop.

The last and most effective one that I came up with was new laws against all types of animal testing. If people are caught testing on animals, they should be fined, shut down, or sent to jail. Since there are none like that, I think this would be the most effective solution to animal testing.

That pretty much sums up what my TEDTalks project is about.

Success and Culture, LA and Snow Lake

The title of my post has 2 sets of very different things. Success and culture of course are different, and LA and Snow Lake are also very different.

Looking at my class’ blogposts, and looking at the kids in LA’s, I can tell that we have all written about different things. We all have different minds and ideas on what we think of this and that.

Success

Most of the blogs I looked at, from Snow Lake and LA, talk about success being achieving goals that you set for yourself. In almost all of the Snow Lake blogs, I saw that most people think of success as being happy, even if you have nothing. Some people in Snow Lake also talked about how it can be money, but it doesn’t have to be. Some people in LA talked about how being successful is about being who you want to be and being happy.

Culture

The blogposts that I read from the 2 different places were very different. Most kids from LA knew exactly what their culture was, and had lots of interesting traditions. They knew exactly what they would put in a box from their culture. But most of my classmates from Snow Lake didn’t know what all of their cultures were since most people had more than one. Some people in my class were unsure of what they would put in a box from their culture. It seems like the kids in LA know a lot more about their culture than us in Snow Lake do.

These two places and these two things that I have been talking about are very different. We all have different ideas, but most of them make you realize one thing: we all think differently about what success and culture mean to us.

Culture in a Box

To me, culture is what a family, group of people, society, etc. do because of what they were taught or what was passed down to them. It is also where your family comes from. You don’t get to choose your culture, it is passed down to you.

I don’t really know what my culture is, all I know is that I am Canadian, obviously. We just follow a regular Canadian lifestyle. We don’t really follow any traditions, except sometimes we eat some cultural foods at my grandma’s house, so I would definitely put that in, since it’s the only thing I could. There are also a lot more whays that you can celebrate your culture: with food, clothes that you wear, things that you do in your daily life, holidays you celebrate, and more.

So here’s the big question: can culture be put into a box? Well, in my opinion, you can and you can’t. You can put something like what you wear and what you eat in a box, but you can’t put any traditions you have in it. You may thing it’s easy to do something like put your culture in a box, but it really isn’t. You have to think about what is most important to you and your family.

The Key To Success

Success can be more than one thing to a person. It can be having a lot of money, or something cool that you’ve wanted for a long time and you finally got it. But just because you have one of those things, or even both, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re happy. You can have all the things in the world that you ever wanted, but if you’re not happy, in my eyes you can’t really be successful.

I think that if you’re happy in life, you’re successful. Even if you have no food, no water, no house, etc. but you’re happy, I think that it’s possible to be successful.

Happiness doesn’t always come from money, but it can. For example, a celebrity can have pretty much whatever they want, and they can be happy. Something else can also make them happy, but sometimes their fame and fortune is what makes them happy.

You can also be successful in things you do. If you have done something you are proud of, if you’ve achieved a goal you set for yourself, etc.

Happiness and success kind of go hand-in-hand, but other things can make you successful in life as well.

Parent-Teacher Interviews=Happy Students

As the title probably explains, parent teacher interviews (AKA 3-way conferences with the teacher, parent, and student but no one calls them that because hardly any student comes in) are coming up, which means almost an extra day off school (we got out at 1030) for everyone in grades K-8. We’re all pretty happy about it. Some kids in my class don’t even come to school on days like these, but I do because my mom makes me mostly :(

This time, I don’t know if I’m going to come to school because I’ve been feeling horrible all week, I think i have a stomach flu or something. I’ve also had bad headaches, so bad I could barely keep my eyes open in class.

So what else can I talk about? Oh yeah, we got our report cards yesterday. I’m doing pretty good in everything.

Next week we get Friday off because its Good Friday. I’m excited for that. So I can sleep in. I haven’t been getting very much sleep lately, but I don’t know why.

Well, silent reading time is almost over, so I should probably sign off now, bye.

Weekend

Today is Friday (yay), and I’m really looking forward to  it. Tonight, I might go to a bonfire on the lake with a bunch of people. I might not go though, and it might not even happen because it is freezing out! It supposed to warm up, but I doubt it.

the Ice Worm also starts today. It’s where you go to the Legion and get a clue every hour, and once you have a clue you try to figure out where the ice worm is hidden in the snow. Most kids have a good time looking for it. It’s a stuffed animal worm that you look for, but your prize is like $100 dollars worth of stuff.

I don’t know what I’m going to do on Saturday yet. On Sunday of this weekend is the Winter Whoot. There is little games that you win prizes/candy in (fish pond, cake walk, etc.). There is also a bouncy house, which is the main attraction. There is also a huge snack table.

Well, I’ve got other things I need to do in this time period, so I better go now. Bye.

Egypt is Out

So for the past while, maybe two weeks, we have been working on an Egypt project in Social Studies on a topic of our choice. First we had to do a one-page essay about our topic, then we had to do a big project also about our topic.

Some of the projects were really cool. There were board games, paper machae models, and some people even brought in Egyptian food that they made. There were many more cool projects brought in. Someone even made their own paper!

The project that I brought in was about education. I drew hieroglyphics on a piece of paper that I made look old my rubbing my pencil to make it look smudged,  and I burnt the edges. Before I drew on it, I dipped the paper in green tea ad let it dry overnight. I thought it looked pretty good, but I didn’t get a very good mark. Oh well. Everyone else did pretty good.

I liked this project because it was fun to do. I hope we do things like this more often because its a little bit of work with the essay, but its fun with the project.
